SABORES COLOMBIANOS: STREET FOOD EDITION
Posted on December 18, 2024
There's nothing quite like the sizzle and aroma of Colombian street food. From the early morning vendors preparing arepas de queso to the late-night empanada carts, our street food culture tells the story of Colombia's diverse culinary heritage.
Arepas de Choclo: Unlike their flatter cousins, these sweet corn arepas are thick, fluffy, and stuffed with melting cheese. Best enjoyed in the morning with a hot tinto (black coffee). Traditionally grilled on flat tops called "planchas," these golden discs are the perfect breakfast on the go.
Chicharrón: Those golden, crispy pieces of pork belly you see displayed in glass cases? That's our version of chicharrón, cooked slowly until the meat is tender and the skin shatters like glass. We serve ours with arepas and lime-dressed ají.
Obleas: The perfect street sweet - paper-thin wafers sandwiched with arequipe (Colombian dulce de leche). Watch for vendors with their distinctive wooden boxes, especially near parks and plazas.
Buñuelos: These cheese-based fritters are a year-round treat but become especially popular during Christmas. Perfectly spherical and golden brown, a good buñuelo should be crispy outside and cloud-like inside.
